How to Set Up a Custom Conversion?
In order to create a custom conversion, go to your Ads Manager as displayed in the image below. Remember that everyone’s Ads Manager dashboard might look different.
In your Ads Manager, you will find a 3 lines or 9 dots icon on your dashboard’s top left corner. Click on that and go to “Events Manager” in the shortcut.
There are 2 ways to create Custom Conversion.
- On your event’s manager, go to Create and then simply click on the Create Custom Conversion. Refer to the screenshot.
- Other than that, you can check on the left, there is another listed option for Custom Conversion.
What is Custom Conversion?
Custom Conversion is you telling Facebook exactly how you want them to track your leads or conversion.
For example, if I wanted to run an ad for a specific case study. Let’s say the one in the image. I would put a lead custom conversion on the Thank You Page.
This is where they land when they land once they have grabbed the lead magnet and have the Call to Action as well.
Going back to your Custom Conversion page, when you create a conversion, you first have to name it. Since no one is going to see the name, you can give it whatever name you want.
Once, you have named the Conversion, in this case, I have named it – Landed on HTF Case Study make sure you have the right pixel selected in the next option.
Further, on the Conversion Event, you will be asked to select the event you would like to track. Instead of ‘all URL traffic’ (as already added) you want to tell Facebook exactly what type of conversion you want with it.
On clicking the ‘All URL Traffic’ tab, you will have all the different options. For this, I am going to select the Lead because this is what I am going for.
Under that, it says that the Custom conversion must meet all of these rules. Where it is mentioned contains, keep it that way only.
Go back to your case study’s Thank You page and copy the end of the URL including the slash (/)
Head back to the Events Manager tab and paste the copied information where it is mentioned: Add URL Keywords.
For a custom conversion with numeric values, you are going to TICK the Enter a Conversion Value box and add the numeric value. But for leads, you will leave it unticked and click on Create.
It will then show you that you have successfully created your Landed on HTF Case Study custom conversion.
As given in the image above, the guidelines in the box are all results of the iOS 14 changes. What you need to do is click on Go to Web Configurations.
Although before that, make sure you have your domain already verified. On your verified domain, you hit the drop-down and then go to Manage Events. There you can edit your custom conversion to put them in order from there.
Once your event is set up, you need to make sure that the custom conversion you want to use is the one at the top.
And that’s how you create a custom conversion
Where to Find Custom Conversion?
Now that your custom conversion creation is completed, go back to the Custom Conversion category on the left. There you can see a full list of all the custom conversions that you have created.
Sometimes, when you create a custom conversion, it is listed down under inactive conversions. You need it to be ACTIVE. To make it active, you have to go through and become a Lead yourself.
This means that you need to sign up for your own lead magnet so that Facebook can register a ‘Lead’
In simple words, in Incognito, you hit return on the page to pretend like a lead and get access for whatever you asked for and officially land on the page.
It might take a couple of minutes for Facebook to register it as lead.
Go back to your Custom Conversion page and refresh. Most often than not, your Conversion will be active.
